When the ideologues of pan-Arab nationalism chose Arabic as the adhesive for a nation, existing only in the collective imagination, they concentrated on the its sacred and unifying features, confident that one day they would speak it have it spoken. More a century later, Standard Arabic has not become a mother tongue and the Arab nation has not seen the light of day. This article examines the connotations of the term ˁarab and its socio-linguistic assessments; calling for unity in diversity and respect for multi-lingualism and multi-ethnicity.
