Abstract

The paper focuses on the analysis of passenger and car traffic moved by shortsea shipping connecting Greece to Italy as well as on an improved multi-criterial decision-making methodology for concept design of fast monohulls. Before introducing innovative, perhaps economically risky marine vehicles over the 'Adriatic-Ionian corridor', optimal design alternatives comparable to recently built fast monohulls are investigated to estimate investment opportunities in a fluctuating market. Economical and theoretical features of fast monohulls are considered simultaneously to solve conflicting and uncertain issues of economic viability. The mathematical design is fed by a large set of naval architecture modules subject to multiple criteria , which evaluate relevant contributes normalized by the methods of fuzzy set theory. Feasible design are filtered on the basis of Pareto optimality concept. In order to evaluate robustness of the most promising non-dominated solutions over intended routes, a shell consisting of a multi-attribute decision-making procedure combined with a risk analysis method has been developed by applying a probabilistic approach to identification of some economic parameters.
