Financed by the Regional Law 19/2000 of Friuli Venezia Giulia for international cooperation in 2011, ‘People vs Borders’ outlines a project of urban and environmental renewal of the areas surrounding the Dobrinja river in Sarajevo, which also includes interventions aimed at enhancing the public use of these areas. For this purpose, the people and their representatives have been involved in a participative strategic plan, in order to support dialogue and shared territorial development strategies. The book collects the results of an international design workshop organized in Sarajevo, within the ‘People vs Borders’ project. The workshop saw the participation of 19 students from the Departments of Architecture of the Universities of Sarajevo and Trieste (E. Marchigiani was among the teachers involved). The participants focused on possible urban planning strategies for the area of Dobrinja based on the needs pointed out by the population during the participation in the planning and interviews with key figures. The first renewal projects devised during the workshop showed that new and simple solutions can only be found talking over ideas envisaging an urban space beyond administrative borders.
