Modification of size of a partially hidden surface are among the most noticeable attributes of the amodal completion. G. Kanizsa (1981) has explained them according to an "energy" model. The present experiment examined whether amodal completion is determined by the continuation of the visible portion and whether more "energy" to continue is related to a greater modal portion. A series of displays in which the covered and uncovered portions were equal and in which the partially hidden figure, energing on one side, varied in height and length, were administered to 10 university students. When the length of the modal portion increased, the amodal portion also increased. Variations in height did not produce reliable effects.
