Abstract

The recent editions by L. Rocchi of Pietro Ferraguto’s and Arcangelo Carradori’s Turkish dictionaries from the 17th century ‒ the former based on Tunisian sources, the latter on Egyptian sources ‒ have cast new light on varieties of Ottoman-Turkish once spoken in North Africa and very little known so far. The paper examines some phonetic, morphological, syntactical and lexical features of Arabic origin that are found in the material of these lexicons and document a kind of Turkish peculiar to arabophone areas.
