One way of approaching two massive figures of what is canonically known as “high modernism” consists in asking oneself: how can Woolf and Joyce speak to us in a fresh, or maybe additional, or simply different fashion? I would like to do this in the light of what we might call the problematic state of criticism and of literary studies and the dangerously uncertain position and gloomy future of the humanities in contemporary Western society. Are there any new modes among the many or few possible, or even among those fallen into disuse perhaps, which literary professionals (critics and academics) can still find “around” Woolf and Joyce, or “around” literature in general? This essay tries to offer some initial considerations on what will be termed the practice of literature.
