In this paper an experimental investigation on the behavior of dowels embedded in concrete is described. The dowel strength under monotonic forces with two different boundary conditions is evaluated. Using the moiré technique, the strain field, induced by the pressure of a transversal loaded bar, is analyzed. It is shown that the maximum dowel resistance is about five times the uniaxial compressive strength of the concrete.

Abstract
