Results of investigations having the purpose to directly determine the magnitude and density of micro-voids with the purpose to further enhance the quality of vacuum pressure impregnation process, are presented in this paper. The void content within ground-wall insulation of ac rotating machines has been analyzed resorting to X-ray computed tomography. The 3D digital structure of coil portions was reconstructed stacking the tomography slices. Specialized image processing tools were used to visualize the void distribution and to estimate their morphological attributes. The histograms representing the number of distributed micro-voids as a function of their volume have been adopted to compare the different samples and minimize the void content thus improving the insulation manufacturing quality.

Abstract
Results of investigations having the purpose to directly determine the magnitude and density of micro-voids with the purpose to further enhance the quality of vacuum pressure impregnation process, are presented in this paper. The void content within ground-wall insulation of ac rotating machines has been analyzed resorting to X-ray computed tomography. The 3D digital structure of coil portions was reconstructed stacking the tomography slices. Specialized image processing tools were used to visualize the void distribution and to estimate their morphological attributes. The histograms representing the number of distributed micro-voids as a function of their volume have been adopted to compare the different samples and minimize the void content thus improving the insulation manufacturing quality.Pubblicazioni consigliate
