The buckling response of monolithic and laminated glass columns under axial compressive loads or beams in out-of-plane bending represents a topic widely investigated by scientists in the last years, since a loss of stability can frequently occur in these typically brittle and slender innovative structural elements. Nevertheless, in practice, common loading conditions are generally more complicated than idealized scenarios investigated through theoretical models. Glass beam-columns, for example, are frequently subjected to combined compressive loads and bending moments. However, differing from elements composed of traditional construction materials, neither experimental results neither recommendations of standards in use are available for the buckling verification of this particular loading condition. In the paper, based on large series of numerical simulations performed on imperfect glass beam-columns of various geometrical and mechanical properties, a non-dimensional nonlinear interaction curve is proposed as resistant domain for a rational buckling verification.

Abstract: | The buckling response of monolithic and laminated glass columns under axial compressive loads or beams in out-of-plane bending represents a topic widely investigated by scientists in the last years, since a loss of stability can frequently occur in these typically brittle and slender innovative structural elements. |
