In this work a brief introduction about first and second law analysis of combined heavy duty diesel engines and Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) waste heat recovery systems is reported. Advantages of using the two approaches and a description of a combined concept will be discussed, with the purpose of improving the efficiency of typical powertrain, propulsion architectures or power units used in the marine and commercial vehicles sectors.
