This paper deals with the loadability characteristics of overhead transmission lines (OHLs). The target is to provide a general analytical formulation of the loadability characteristics of uncompensated OHLs. This is a completely new approach: no previously published work has adopted an analytical approach to characterize the different regions of the loadability curves. In order to allow a direct comparison with previous works, an application example concerns the 400 kV single circuit OHLs widely used in Western Europe.

Abstract

This paper deals with the loadability characteristics of overhead transmission lines (OHLs). The target is to provide a general analytical formulation of the loadability characteristics of uncompensated OHLs. This is a completely new approach: no previously published work has adopted an analytical approach to characterize the different regions of the loadability curves. In order to allow a direct comparison with previous works, an application example concerns the 400 kV single circuit OHLs widely used in Western Europe.
