In an increasingly technological society, the ability to interpret and manipulate numerical information represents an essential competence for future academic and occupational success, socioeconomic status, and general well-being of the individual. For these reasons, given the predominant use of numbers and mathematical reasoning in a modern society, impairment in mathematical learning can pose severe difficulties not only at school but also in everyday life. In the current contribution, we first outline the concepts of specific learning difficulties and math learning disabilities. Next, the cognitive factors and mechanisms underlying math difficulties in students are described. Finally, we consider the difficulties associated with the domains of mathematical reasoning and math problem solving, which have been relatively neglected in math learning research despite their extreme relevance in school curriculum and in everyday life. A detailed analysis of the cognitive skills related to arithmetic word problem solving is given in the last part of the chapter.
