This volume is dedicated to Carol Taylor Torsello, in honour of her remarkable work as a scholar in the field of English Language and Linguistics. A graduate of UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles) and Padova University, she pursued a brilliant career at the Universities of Trieste and Padova, where she made an outstanding contribution to research and teaching in such diverse areas as systemic-functional linguistics, corpus linguistics, English literature, discourse analysis, needs analysis, syllabus design and language testing. Carol has also been a key figure in the creation and development of University Language Centres. She was director of the University Language Centres of Trieste and Padova, president of AICLU (Associazione Italiana dei Centri Linguistici Universitari) and later also of CercleS (Confédération Européenne des Centres de Langues de l’Enseignement Supérieur). She worked with great energy and dedication to promote the study of English Linguistics, and toenhance the level of language teaching and teacher training, both in Italy and abroad. In research, when teaching and in her activities in Language Centres, she was an inspiration to many, and was appreciated for her generosity and sensitivity both as a person and as a mentor. This Festchrift contains contributions from friends, colleagues and former students of Carol from all over Italy. They are divided into four main areas of study – linguistics, translation, language teaching and literature. They thus reflect Carol’s broad range of academic interests, and represent a fitting tribute to her commitment to fostering excellence in English Studies. She leaves a great legacy to us all.
