Ancient frescoes undergo complex degradation phenomena that irreversibly alter the surfaces and compromise the structural integrity, putting at risk the historic and cultural legacy from the past. To overcome the limitations of current conservation strategies, a formulation based on cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2-x NPs) and chitosan was designed. The catalytic potential of CeO2-x NPs and their physico-chemical characteristics were tested with the aim of providing a global protection. Moreover, a previously published chitosan formulation [1] was optimized, moving away from the conventionally used acrylic polymers. This formulation was applied onto especially designed mock-ups and preliminary tests were implemented.
