Afuá (Pará, Brazil) is a major case study of a fragile context exposed to multiple hazards and threats. Almost entirely built on stilts, this Amazonian city represents an emblematic example of the coexistence of natural and urban environment. Located on the Delta of the Amazon River, Afuá is exposed to the risk of flooding that has considerably increased due to climate change. Moreover, deforestation, small-scale sprawl and “touristification” are threatening the conservation of the natural, architectural and cultural heritage of the town. Through a qualitative SWOT analysis, this project investigates the vulnerability of Afuá facing potential threats, thus exploring possible scenarios and strategies for the prevention and mitigation of disaster and damages.

Abstract
Afuá (Pará, Brazil) is a major case study of a fragile context exposed to multiple hazards and threats. Almost entirely built on stilts, this Amazonian city represents an emblematic example of the coexistence of natural and urban environment. Located on the Delta of the Amazon River, Afuá is exposed to the risk of flooding that has considerably increased due to climate change. Moreover, deforestation, small-scale sprawl and “touristification” are threatening the conservation of the natural, architectural and cultural heritage of the town. Through a qualitative SWOT analysis, this project investigates the vulnerability of Afuá facing potential threats, thus exploring possible scenarios and strategies for the prevention and mitigation of disaster and damages.Pubblicazioni consigliate
