Intercultural disparities are investigated during simultaneous interpretation at linguistics confer-ences in institutional settings in an unusual European language combination: English and LIS (Lingua dei Segni Italiana – Italian Sign Language). More specifically the aim of this present study is to observe whether during the mediation process there is awareness of and respect for cul-tural specificity or whether there is some form of adjustment producing cultural and linguistic dis-tortion. Detailed analysis was conducted on a multimodal corpus composed of sound, images and written transcriptions of spoken and signed discourse, to pinpoint any strategies of removal, avoidance or attenuation of cultural specificities or vice versa to identify those occurrences re-spectful of cultural differences: “good practice”.
