Some Issues in Specialist-Translator Training

The article addresses some controversial issues concerning translator training by discussing eight statements and questions in the field of translation which were in turn posed and discussed by Anthony Pym in a previous article. In the light of the long-term objectives of raising the professional status of translators and of translation as an academic discipline, the article discusses whether training should be in universities, the range of jobs available for translators in the translation industry, the range of different training needs universities should cater for, the competences which should be offered, the translators’ working languages, the differences between translation teaching and language learning, the usefulness of theories to translation trainees and the importance of technology in a curriculum for translators.
