The paper is concerned with the active compensation of the flicker phenomenon in the medium-voltage lines using multilevel converters. Two configurations of compensator are designed, built up on the Diode Clamped Multilevel Converter (DCMLC) and the Cascade H-bridge Multilevel Converter (CMLC). By analytical procedure, the current ratings of the semiconductor devices are established, and the size of the passive elements of the compensators is found. The main outcome of the study is that the two configurations substantially require the same overall rating for the semiconductor devices, with the exception of the clamping diodes in the DCMLC-based configuration. As a counterpart, the latter configuration needs a lower overall capacitance.

Abstract
As a counterpart, the latter configuration needs a lower overall capacitance.Pubblicazioni consigliate
