The essay examines the evolution of the Italian language and of dialects, starting from the unification of Italy and following the Great Migration that marked profound changes in the linguistic behavior of the Italian emigrants abroad. Afterwards the Italian language and dialects have been analysed in the US context since when they were introduced by the first immigrants up to more recent times; the observations of some latest trends are based on the data resulting from research conducted in the Eighties and at the beginning of 2000 in the area of New York City. Data from the U.S. Census Bureau are then considered through which it is possible to observe some tendencies regarding the use of the Italian language and of the dialects both by the Italian Americans and by other Americans in general. Furthermore some reflections on the use of the Italian language and of the dialects are proposed by referring to the results of a survey conducted in 2013 by the author on a sample of young Italian Americans living in New York City and in its greater surrounding area.

Abstract
Furthermore some reflections on the use of the Italian language and of the dialects are proposed by referring to the results of a survey conducted in 2013 by the author on a sample of young Italian Americans living in New York City and in its greater surrounding area.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
