Abstract

Borges again points out literature is made of dreams, reminding us that everything begins with a dream. It seems Stevenson dreamt the central scene of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and built the story around it. Similarly architecture is constructed around a dream, the dream not necessarily intended to associate to any exact psychic state. Also, one can dream whileawake. The dream is nothing other than a vision of an immaterial image, and architecture has the primary power to concretize this vision, to transform into matter what was before only an image, an idea, a dream in fact. In fact, more than any other artistic discipline, architecture possesses the particularity of having the ability to intervene on the objective reality of a place, transforming it, throught the realization of a subjective vision into an objectively different reality: thus fulfilling a metamorphosis of existing. This metamorphosis does not construct an image or a vision, but instead that of a dream. The Lubijana by Joze Plečnik or the architecture of Gaudì can only be the fruit of a dream.
