In order to honor the breadth and clarity of Dean Baias’s scholarship, the article investigates the role that the notion of ‘apparence’ plays in tort law within civil law jurisdictions, and in particular in the French, Belgian, Italian and Romanian legal systems. Through the analysis of the cases in which the notion emerges in the extracontractual practice of these countries, the article aims to demonstrate that the notion of ‘apparence’ is polysemic and to shed light on its multiple meanings in the tort law field.
