“The Indians are a People that never value their time”. Mappature della diversità umana e concettualizzazioni del tempo storico nel Nord Atlantico del primo Settecento

Nel corso del diciottesimo secolo matura nella cultura europea una gerarchizzazione storica della diversità umana, sotto forma di teorizzazioni di progresso e sviluppo che ipostatizzano nelle società del globo diversi stadi nel percorso dell’umanità. Questo tipo di elaborazione è oggetto di una fortuna consolidata nella storia delle idee e in generale nella storiografia contemporanea interessata al pensiero e alla scrittura storico-filosofici e storico-antiquari. Lo scopo del presente lavoro è aggiungere, a questa fortuna, un tassello complementare: quello degli usi culturali di queste idee di tempo nel quadro dell’incontro concreto con l’alterità umana, all’interno di un contesto geografico e storico-culturale preciso, quello nordamericano. Concentrare l’attenzione su resoconti derivati da esperienze dirette di contatto con le popolazioni nordamericane permette di mettere a fuoco e problematizzare l’interazione che questi testi rivelano tra palinsesto culturale e osservazione diretta, tra nozione pre-esistente e peso dell’esperienza empirica. Due casi di studio fruttiferi nel primo Settecento di lingua inglese sono rappresentati da 'A New Voyage to Carolina' di John Lawson (1709) e 'The History of the Five Indian Nations' di Cadwallader Colden (1727, 1747). Questi testi sono presi in considerazione in questo saggio con attenzione alla costruzione testuale del sapere storico, al rapporto con fonti scritte, e all'atteggiamento verso forse di conoscenza indigene. / ENGLISH: During the 18th century, a historical hierarchization of human diversity matured in European culture, in the form of theorisations of progress and development that hypostatised different stages of humanity's progress in societies around the globe. This type of elaboration is the object of a consolidated fortune in the history of ideas and in general in contemporary historiography interested in historical-philosophical and historical-antiquarian thought and writing. The aim of the present work is to add a complementary piece to this fortune: that of the cultural uses of these ideas of time in the context of the encounter with human otherness, within a precise geographical and historical-cultural context, that of North America. Focusing on accounts based on direct experiences of contact with North American populations allows us to focus on and problematise the interaction that these texts reveal between cultural palimpsest and direct observation, between pre-existing notions and the weight of empirical experience. Two fruitful case studies in the early eighteenth century English language are represented by John Lawson's 'A New Voyage to Carolina' (1709) and Cadwallader Colden's 'The History of the Five Indian Nations' (1727, 1747). These texts are considered in this essay with attention to the textual construction of historical knowledge, the relationship to written sources, and attitudes towards indigenous knowledge.
