This essay describes some translation strategies of what I have called the “language of the Father”, that is, the linguistic characterisation of three characters who play the role of Father in three different novels by Umberto Eco (The Island of the Day Before, Baudolino, and The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana). The language of the Father is characterised by the presence of piamontesisms and proverbs in an intertextual game that embraces these three novels, which leads us to propose a reflection on intertextuality in translation and to exemplify some solutions adopted in the translation of diatopic varieties.

Abstract

This essay describes some translation strategies of what I have called the “language of the Father”, that is, the linguistic characterisation of three characters who play the role of Father in three different novels by Umberto Eco (The Island of the Day Before, Baudolino, and The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana). The language of the Father is characterised by the presence of piamontesisms and proverbs in an intertextual game that embraces these three novels, which leads us to propose a reflection on intertextuality in translation and to exemplify some solutions adopted in the translation of diatopic varieties.
