Launched in April 2022 thanks to the efforts of Russian author and journalist Linor Goralik, the Russian Oppositional Arts Review (ROAR) is an online platform for Russophone texts (prose, poetry, essays, sound, and art works) in which authors are free to express themselves (also opting for anonymity or pseudonyms), particularly against the Russian invasion of Ukraine. On the 24th of each odd month a new issue is published, at once in Russian and English. In this interview ROAR’s founder Linor Goralik and I discuss a variety of topics ranging from contexts of production and release to reception, censorship, and translatability.
