In recent times, initiatives have multiplied in academia to integrate activities centring on or involving Wikipedia into university courses in order to develop a range of skills. Translation-related research has mainly focused on the use of Wikipedia by translators, on the translation of Wikipedia entries, on Wikipedia’s content or on the organization of editathons and translatathons to develop translation competence. This chapter describes how combining the activities of the European Society for Translation Studies (EST) Wikicommittee and the University of Padova project Learning with Wikipedia achieved the twofold purpose of enhancing the visibility of translation studies and developing MA students’ translation competence(s). Drawing on heritage and innovative resources, MA translation students participated in the EST-University of Padova project consisting of a simulation of a real-world translation task: students translated, (re-)wrote, edited, revised and improved Wikipedia entries on translation studies topics created within the EST wikiproject. Over two academic years, students translated selected EST entries on translation studies in the English Wikipedia through ‘translatathon’ activities meant to enhance their translation competences and knowledge. Activities also included critical analysis of entries on translation in a range of online encyclopedias in English and Italian as a way to explore the making of Wikipedia and to dig deep into Wikipedia’s dark matter. The paper argues that, besides the challenges and rewards such activities offer at the level of translation theory and practice, combining traditional materials with innovative group tasks may provide students with valuable insights into translation and knowledge dissemination (Shuttleworth, 2017a, 2018) while also offering useful experience of cooperative work (Al-Shehari, 2017) as well as preparing them for the translation profession in the self-contained ecosystem of Wikipedia and beyond. This might deserve further investigation through research on the didactics of translation, especially from the perspective of constructivist approaches and cooperative learning (Kiraly, 2014,5 2016
