The text, in form of a serious divertissement, offers a series of reflections on the status of multimedia translation as applied to a culturally marked textual genre: the comic strip in its Russian realization. Retracing the stages of their participation in the Conference and Seminar discussed in this volume, the authors analyse the typological specificities of Russian komiks and the translation challenges it poses, particularly in its specific modulation devoted to the classics of Russian literature. The theme of the “dialogue with the classics” is outlined here in terms of rewritings that invite us to renew our relationship with tradition through the new languages that modernity both imposes and shapes. In this dimension, translation plays a fundamental role as space where new relationships between (semiotic) languages are created. The case of comics is paradigmatic, as it is a site where intralinguistic, interlinguistic, and intersemiotic translation take place ‘simultaneously’. The pages presented here speak – albeit briefly – of hermeneutic challenges and didactic proposals, from which emerges the theoretical postulate of exploring a new status for translation as a responsible and creative communicative practice. A cabaret of semiotic zakuski, with the offering of quantum plots, comic-strip translations, hidden quotations – and a final invitation. Because translation, by definition a place of encounter, is also the space where new places of encounter are created. “In between”.
