Bone fracture risk is strongly related not only to the mass content, but also to the bone micro-architecture. While the compressive strength of cancellous bone is proportional to its Young modulus, it is unfortunately impossible to perform mechanical tests in vivo. Threedimensional numerical analysis of bone volumes has proved an important tool in this field, but when comparing simulation results with experimental ones there are some unavoidable uncertainties. Experimental tests are also affected by intrinsic difficulties that are amplified, as the test is unique and unrepeatable. The aim of this work is to show that sintered replicas of the examined bone portion - built by rapid prototyping in a relatively homogeneous and well characterized material - can be used in mechanical tests to assess the bone architecture load bearing capabilities and provide a validation tool for numerical simulations.
