The problem of the correct formulation of a roll damping model and of an efficient evaluation of the damping coefficients are examined in a critical analysis. It results that, whereas numerical hydrodynamics does not forecast satisfactorily results valid for large amplitude rolling, experiments are more reliable but their analysis also presents some shortcomings that make difficult to forecast ultimately the damping model. Suggestions are given for a more rational parameter estimation.

Abstract
The problem of the correct formulation of a roll damping model and of an efficient evaluation of the damping coefficients are examined in a critical analysis. It results that, whereas numerical hydrodynamics does not forecast satisfactorily results valid for large amplitude rolling, experiments are more reliable but their analysis also presents some shortcomings that make difficult to forecast ultimately the damping model. Suggestions are given for a more rational parameter estimation.File in questo prodotto:
