The Tohoku-Oki earthquake (M=9.0) has provided an unprecedented opportunity to utilize Japan’s monitoring networks (e.g., GPS, seismic and DART buoys) to gather data. The implications of the new observations, especially about the dynamical properties of tectonic faults, need to be further explored and integrated in sound physical models of earthquakes to go towards better quantification of the related hazards. Abstract
