The volume focuses on the Andean cosmovision called buen vivir and its manifestations on the social, environmental, legal, economic spheres. Recognized in the constitutions of Ecuador (2008) and Bolivia (2009), the buen vivir (sumak kawsay or suma qamaña in local idioms) does not conceive the separation between human beings and nature typical of the Western societies. It is a systemic approach to the development and sustainability, based on the subjective aspect rather than the objective one, and which differs from the linear models of Western development. The aim of the volume is to analyze the concepts of sustainable development and well-being in Latin America in the light of the buen vivir and to understand their potential in comparison to the European societies.
