Starting from the eighteenth century, the scientific evaluation of the history of money and monetary theories has been reflected in an extensive bibliography, also in Italian language ; on the contrary, for the previous centuries, few texts are to be found outside the specialists. The study of teleology and natural theology by economists, immediately preceding and following Adam Smith’s landmark essays, remained so long in the background, almost disregarded.
