Actions: A Plea For an Ordinary Framework

This thesis deals with some relevant issues in the philosophy of action: the distinction between actions and events, the relation between the notions of «cause» and «action», the specificity of the agent’s role with respect to what is considered as her action. My main aim is to propose a non reductive notion of action able to take into account the ordinary framework within which human actions are understood and ascribed to their agents. This thesis is structured in three chapters. In the first chapter, I expose and discuss the main approaches to the issue of action individuation (Anscombe’s, Davidson’s, Goldman’s and Maher’s). In the second chapter, I analyze the ways in which the relation between the notion of cause and that of action has been developed. The claims of Lowe, Hornsby and Davidson in particular will be discussed. In the third chapter, I propose a non reductive notion of action which takes the ascription of responsibility to the agent as the inter-subjective criterion by which actions are identified and defined.

La tesi si sviluppa attorno ad alcuni problemi aperti in filosofia dell’azione: la distinzione tra azioni ed eventi, il rapporto tra le nozioni di «causa» e di «azione», la definizione del ruolo dell’agente rispetto a ciò che viene considerata la sua azione. Il mio obiettivo consiste nel proporre una nozione non riduttiva di azione che renda conto della dimensione ordinaria all’interno della quale le azioni umane vengono ascritte e comprese. La tesi è organizzata in tre capitoli. Nel primo capitolo vengono presentati e discussi gli approcci principali al problema dell’individuazione delle azioni. Il secondo capitolo analizza come è stata articolata la relazione tra la nozione di causa e la nozione di azione. Nel terzo capitolo viene proposta una nozione di azione non riduttiva che si basa sull’ascrizione di responsabilità all’agente come ciò che identifica e definisce l’azione stessa
