Abstract

In August 1828, Domenico Rossetti de Scander assigned Francesco Putinati, engraver for the imperial mint of Milan, with the task of realising a medal to celebrate the jubilee of Trieste’s Freeport. Both the commission and the production of the medal were marked by misunderstandings, delays, and incorrect iconographic and epigraphy choices. As a result, the first medal was rejected and a second one, modified, was struck in the Spring of the following year. In this article, the series of events is reconstructed, thanks to written correspondence and archival documents.
