The lack of consensus among clinicians and pathologists, owing to the mixture of clinical and histopathologic features used to define the various melanocytic nevi, underscores the need for a better classification system for these benign lesions. Most dermoscopic patterns of melanocytic nevi correspond to specific histopathologic correlates and, based on this, we recently introduced a new classification system of melanocytic nevi that is directed at clinicians dealing with early diagnosis of melanoma, as well at pathologists, in order to promote better communication between these different specialists. © 2008 Expert Reviews Ltd.

Abstract

The lack of consensus among clinicians and pathologists, owing to the mixture of clinical and histopathologic features used to define the various melanocytic nevi, underscores the need for a better classification system for these benign lesions. Most dermoscopic patterns of melanocytic nevi correspond to specific histopathologic correlates and, based on this, we recently introduced a new classification system of melanocytic nevi that is directed at clinicians dealing with early diagnosis of melanoma, as well at pathologists, in order to promote better communication between these different specialists. © 2008 Expert Reviews Ltd.
