Objectives: This study aims to examine the principal causes of odontogenic infections frequently observed in the daily clinical practice, their evolution and possible complications. Materials and methods: The aim of the present course is to help clinicians to perform a correct physical examination of the patient, to gather a wide and comprehensive medical history and to execute or request suitable laboratory tests. In order to allow differential diagnoses of odontogenic infections versus other oral pathologies, ad hoc flow charts are illustrated. Subsequently, the major causes of odontogenic infections are defined with particular emphasis to their etiology and evolution. Results and conclusions: If not recognized nor properly managed, odontogenic infections may seriously affect the patient's health. A correct diagnostic classification and a targeted and effective medical therapy are fundamental steps to forestall the onset of antibiotic resistances. In fact, these could increase patient's morbidity and mortality as well as jeopardize the medical therapy outcome.
