The essay aims at explaining the use of electronic voting systems in the main South Asian democratic experiences, from the pioneering use of Electronic Voting Machines in India to the current developments in other “recent” democracies. After the analysis of the legal regimes and the political/electoral events, I will highlight several general questions that arise at the intersection of new technologies, confidence in the democratic system and the legitimacy of political power.

Abstract
