During the Nineteenth Century, Italian numismatists and collectors mostly neglected Byzantine coinage, despite the fact that this series had already been granted autonomy and great historical importance in France. In Italy, the collecting of Greek, Roman and Medieval coins remained prevalent. Only at the end of the Nineteenth century and in the first decades of the Twentieth did the issues of the Byzantine Empire receive more attention, but without reaching the importance given to Greek, Roman and Medieval coins.
