The aim of this paper is to introduce some elements for a reflection on education in urban planning theory and practice. Which project form is best suited to convey knowledge about principles, tools and techniques of a discipline subject to deep change? To answer this question, we have to consider the framework of the surrounding conditions that affects the urban planning teaching and practicing: university reform that influences ways of educating and learning; the need to equip students to respond to the spatial effects of known crises; the urgent need to renew an Italian tradition of urban design. To look at teaching practices through these questions highlights some useful elements for establishing arenas of critical confrontation on the urban design.
