Janueys, merchants of Itaille: i rapporti commerciali tra Genova e l’Inghilterra negli anni della crisi (1458-1466)

The thesis is focused on the community of Genoese merchants active in England, and in particular in London, in the years between 1458-1466; this period, in fact, marked a crisis in commercial relations between the reign of Henry VI and Edward IV and the Ligurian commercial operators, which broke out following some acts of piracy carried out off the coast of Malta by Giuliano Gattilusio, a corsair linked to the Ligurian city. The aim of the paper is to reconstruct the historical context in which the Genoese merchants found themselves operating, the functioning of their farm and the network of relationships they had built with their English interlocutors. In addition to this, thanks to the study of primary Genoese, Milanese and English sources, the historical-economic macro-context of England during the War of the Roses in which the Genoese massari found themselves operating has been reconstructed. Given the relevance of some of these documents for research purposes (diplomatic, administrative and financial sources), moreover, within the elaborate there is also their complete transcript and/or summary, which, it is believed, may be useful for starting future courses of study.

La tesi è focalizzata sulla comunità di mercanti genovesi attivi in Inghilterra, e in particolare a Londra, negli anni tra il 1458-1466; tale periodo, infatti, segnò una crisi nelle relazioni commerciali tra il regno di Enrico VI ed Edoardo IV e gli operatori commerciali liguri, scoppiata in seguito ad alcuni atti di pirateria messi in atto al largo di Malta da Giuliano Gattilusio, corsaro legato alla città ligure. Obiettivo dell'eleborato è quello di ricostruire il contesto storico in cui i mercanti genovesi si trovarono a operare, il funzionamento della loro massaria e la rete di rapporti che avevano costruito con i loro interlocutori inglesi. Oltre a ciò, grazie allo studio di fonti primarie genovesi, milanesi e inglesi, è stato ricostruito il macrocontesto storico-economico dell'Inghilterra della Guerra delle due rose in cui i massari genovesi si trovarono a operare. Vista la rilevanza di alcuni di questi documenti ai fini della ricerca (fonti diplomatiche, amministrative e finanziarie), inoltre, all'interno dell'elaborato vi è anche la loro trascrizione completa e/o il regesto, che, si ritiene, potranno essere utili per l'avvio di futuri percorsi di studio.
