The study of archive documents concerning Emilia Romagna region is one of the three lines of research in progress aimed at an in-depth investigation of the history of medieval coinage in central Italy. The first results are published with some considerations and evidence already found that allow us to outline local peculiarities within an extremely complex area. The acquisition of further documentary data will be fundamental to clarify the many questions still open and to corroborate the considerations hypothesised. This territory is configured as extremely dynamic and is characterised by the alternance and overlapping of different coinage areas. This reality is also reflected in the simultaneous appearance on the markets of various types of denarii with different style, weight and alloy, which required the presence of experts in the art of exchange.
