In this study the frequency of brain perivenular lesions (PVL) was used as a marker for differentiating brain white matter lesions present in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) from those observed in systemic autoimmune diseases with inflammatory vasculopathies (SAD) and brain involvement. Preliminary data were obtained in 424 lesions (n=10 MS, 3 SAD). Although PVL can be detected also in SAD, their proportion out of total lesions seems remarkably higher in MS, suggesting they represent a useful marker of disease.

Abstract

In this study the frequency of brain perivenular lesions (PVL) was used as a marker for differentiating brain white matter lesions present in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) from those observed in systemic autoimmune diseases with inflammatory vasculopathies (SAD) and brain involvement. Preliminary data were obtained in 424 lesions (n=10 MS, 3 SAD). Although PVL can be detected also in SAD, their proportion out of total lesions seems remarkably higher in MS, suggesting they represent a useful marker of disease.
