The Interreg Italy-Austria 21-27 BeSENSHome project aims to study the accessibility of refuge spaces equipped with a sensor system that monitors well-being or discomfort conditions. Such spaces can improve the usability of collective environments – shopping centers, hospital waiting rooms, and railway stations – where neurodiverse individuals, hypersensitive persons, or those experiencing anxiety may encounter sensory overload. The paper illustrates, among the methods adopted in the project, a co-design experience with users, specifically young adults on the autism spectrum, who become co-creators of spaces where the senses of place can be recalibrated. The challenges faced by individuals identified as "vulnerable" can help create more inclusive environments for the entire community.
