The essay first focuses on Baader’s conviction that modern philosophy from Descartes to Hegel had taken an increasing autonomistic and atheistic direction. It then examines the relationship between the religious philosophy of Baader and that of Hegel. In particular, it is based on the philosophical dialogue between the two thinkers as it begun in the Vorrede to the second edition of the Enzyklopädie der philosophischen Wissenschaften im Grundrisse (1827), where Hegel responded to some criticisms made against him by Baader in a previous 1824 essay. The second part of the paper addresses Baader’s reply to such criticisms, in particular those concerned with the Hegelian concept of matter and spiritual nature. The concluding remarks aim at a useful historical analysis of the impact of such discussions on German philosophy in the aftermath of the death of the two philosophers.
