Changing course in the direction of sustainable development of the maritime transport sector is one of the most difficult challenges facing the EU today to ensure the preservation of biodiversity and the survival of the marine ecosystem, on which maritime transport appears to exert significant impacts. Starting from a critical assessment of the concept of biodiversity, in the light of geographic studies on geodiversity, the research, through the analysis and processing of data provided by geoportals and other research bodies, and data on the evolution of maritime transport, aims to understand quantitative and qualitative aspects of the impact of such transport on marine biodiversity in the Mediterranean context, with the aim of developing specific impact indica tors useful for policy making.
