Notas sobre el experimentalismo lingüístico en Puppet. A Chicano Novella, de Margarita Cota-Cárdenas

Puppet A Chicano Novella (1985/2000), by Margarita Cota-Cárdenas, is a rare example of Chicano literature written predominantly in Spanish (though interspersed with heteroglossic elements). Its relevance lies undoubtedly in the topic, police brutality towards minorities, but also in its style, which draws on the full range of the author's translingual resources. More specifically, Cota-Cárdenas constructs a text that is a compendium of the most stigmatized features of popular Spanish, based on the rural speech of the US south-west but not limited to it. The radical nature of the experimentalism in the novel lies in that it uses not only lexical but also non-standard phonological and morphological features. The article concludes with some brief observations on the translation strategies used in the English version to convey the linguistic variation of the text.
