At the Origins of Ukraine: Some Aspects of the Economic and Cultural History of Kyivan Rus’ The origins of the modern Ukrainian state lie in the territory on both sides of the middle course of the Dnipro River – the historical core of Kievan Rus'. The huge medieval state of the Eastern Slav peoples participated in the international policy, economy and culture of Europe and Byzantium in the 9th-13th centuries. This article investigates some of the main components of economy, society and culture of Medieval Rus’, such as: agriculture, craft, commerce, money, architecture, art, including mosaics, frescoes, iconography, manuscript miniatures.
