Interprétation et technologies: d'où partons-nous?

The paper examines the evolution of technology in the field of conference interpreting. After providing an overview of interpreting modes (consecutive and simultaneous) through the lens of technological advances which, in turn, have altered or challenged the interpreting process itself, the author reviews recent technological developments, from Remote Interpreting to Simultaneous Interpreting Platforms (SIDPs) via Computer-Assisted Interpreting Tools (CAIT), without overlooking so-called machine interpreting. Could the latter replace the human interpreter? An analysis of technological developments in interpreting may suggest some plausible answers, although, beyond technical issues, it is necessary to keep the human element at the heart of the (including ethical) debate on AI.
