This paper explores the European city as a stratified cultural phenomenon, where public open space - squares, gardens, boulevards - acts as a shared ground between memory and nature. Drawing on the ECOC program as a lens, selected case studies show how cultural events trigger lasting spatial transformations, revealing a historical ecology of urban space as both symbolic and regenerative.
