This article analyzes Foucault’s Introduction to Kant’s Anthropology in the light of other texts: his thesis on Hegel’s Phenomenology and the lecture course on “The Anthropological Question.” Against interpretations emphasizing the influence of Nietzsche or Heidegger, it argues that the relationship between Kantian critical philosophy and anthropology is best explained through the general framework of the Phenomenology of Spirit. A comparison with the 1954–1955 lectures confirms this reading and highlights the value of an interpretation still largely neglected by Kant scholarship.

Abstract

This article analyzes Foucault’s Introduction to Kant’s Anthropology in the light of other texts: his thesis on Hegel’s Phenomenology and the lecture course on “The Anthropological Question.” Against interpretations emphasizing the influence of Nietzsche or Heidegger, it argues that the relationship between Kantian critical philosophy and anthropology is best explained through the general framework of the Phenomenology of Spirit. A comparison with the 1954–1955 lectures confirms this reading and highlights the value of an interpretation still largely neglected by Kant scholarship.
