Die caffettiera im Deutschen – Entlehnung eines Referenten ohne Bezeichnung

The love for Italian coffee has extended the use of the traditional caffettiera for its preparation at home in the German-speaking countries. However, in this case, the object has been borrowed without a denomination. Even a fixed calque has not been established, so that, if one wants to speak about the referent in German, it comes to a denomination emergency. The article deals with the different denominations that are used as a substitute. After the discussion of factors which block a lexicalized name, a record of the substitute lexemes in bilingual dictionaries, in texts of producers of the coffee machine as well as in the distribution trade and in journalistic texts takes place. The central part of the paper is a questionnaire survey on the designation of the caffettiera among 66 German speakers. When evaluating the data, we will also discuss semantic blockages and shifts in the lexical language contact.
